Add Your Share to YNAB Together — Without Linking Your Bank Account

(photo in, shared budget transaction out)

Snap a photo of your receipt, check what was read, and send it to your shared YNAB budget.
Your partner sees that one expense — not your whole bank account.

For couples, families and roommates running a shared budget on YNAB Together.

Joining a Shared Budget Shouldn't Mean Sharing Your Whole Bank Account

YNAB Together lets a household share one budget while everyone keeps their own login. But getting your own spending into that shared budget usually comes down to two options: link your personal bank account (now your partner can see every transaction you make, not just the shared ones), or type each purchase in by hand (which most people stop doing within a week).

Spendify is a third option: photograph the receipts you want to share, and send only those — nothing else from your account ever touches the shared budget.

From Your Receipt to the Shared Budget in Three Steps

1

Scan your receipt

Take a photo or upload an image. Spendify reads the date, merchant and total.

2

Review the details

OCR is not perfect, so you check the result and fix anything that is wrong.

3

Send it to the shared account

Connect your own YNAB login, pick the shared plan and account, and send it there — your partner does the same from their own Spendify account.

Built for How YNAB Together Actually Works

  • ✓ Everyone keeps their own login — just like YNAB Together itself, there's no single shared Spendify account to pass around.
  • ✓ Only the receipts you choose reach the shared budget. Your other accounts and the rest of your spending stay private.
  • ✓ Works for cash purchases, which never show up in a bank feed at all — often the only practical way to get them into a shared budget without typing.
  • ✓ Works even if your bank isn't one YNAB can sync automatically. Direct Import covers specific banks, not every bank in every country, and that coverage has changed before.
  • ✓ A copy of every receipt photo stays in your own Spendify account, so if a question ever comes up about a shared expense, it's a tap away.

Your YNAB Categories Stay Intact

Spendify never overwrites categories in YNAB. Transactions arrive without one, so your budget, your rules and your category habits stay in YNAB — whoever in the household normally handles categorising keeps doing it exactly the same way.

Categories you set inside Spendify are for your own organisation only. They are never sent to YNAB.

Connect YNAB, Pick the Shared Budget

In Settings, choose "Connect YNAB", sign in on YNAB's own site with your own login and approve access. Then pick the shared plan and the account your receipts should go to from a list — the same shared budget your YNAB Together group already uses. There is no token to create and no ID to copy.

Spendify never sees your YNAB password. Your access is stored encrypted and used only to list your plans and accounts and to create the transactions you select. You can disconnect at any time from Settings. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

No Double Entries From Spendify — But One Thing to Watch For

Spendify remembers which receipts you have already sent and leaves them out of the next export, so you can't accidentally send the same receipt twice from your own account.

One limit worth knowing in a shared budget: Spendify does not read existing YNAB transactions, so if your partner's bank account is also linked to the same budget, it can't tell whether a purchase you photograph was already imported from their bank. Check for a duplicate in YNAB, the same way you would with any manual entry.

Frequently asked questions

Can everyone in a YNAB Together group use Spendify?

Yes. Each person creates their own free Spendify account, connects it to YNAB with their own login, and picks the shared budget and account during setup. You don't need one joint Spendify account — each person's 10 free receipts a month apply separately.

Does my partner see my bank account if I use Spendify?

No. Spendify never asks for your bank credentials and never connects to your bank at all. You photograph a receipt, and only that receipt's date, amount and merchant are sent to the shared budget. Your other accounts and the rest of your spending stay private.

Can two people send receipts to the same shared account?

Yes. Each person connects their own Spendify account to YNAB and picks the same shared plan and account. Every receipt becomes its own transaction, so you can both add expenses independently.

What if my partner's bank account is already linked to the same budget?

Then the same purchase could appear twice — once imported automatically from the bank, once from your receipt. Spendify doesn't read your existing YNAB transactions, so it can't detect that on its own. Check for a duplicate in YNAB, the same way you would with any manual entry.

Does this work for roommates, not just couples?

Yes. Anything YNAB Together supports — a couple, a family, roommates splitting household costs — works the same way with Spendify: everyone logs their own share from their own phone.
